Jesse Amado (San Antonio)
Red, Blue, Yellow and Spurs, 2002
Oil and label tape on paper mounted
on canvas
28 x 22 in.
In this series of three paintings, Jesse
Amado pays homage to Piet Mondrian’s compositions,
while giving them a unique twist. Each composition
is the exact mirror image of a Mondrian painting.
However, instead of painting in the black grid lines,
Amado has taken a label maker and used black label
tape to print the words of a song, subtitles from
a movie, and in direct homage to the Spurs, an excerpt
from an article written of the Spurs’ 1999 NBA
Championship. By using these words, he crosses indirectly
into the mediums of music, film and media
Jesse Amado received his BFA and MFA
from the University of Texas at San Antonio. He is
an artist and a firefighter for the San Antonio Fire
Department.
