AT&T Center Collection of Art: Charter Level, Coleman

John Coleman (San Antonio)
Rodeo Bull Rider, 2002

Oil on canvas
36 x 60 in.

Coleman describes Rodeo Bull Rider as “an example of the joy and thrill of the rodeo bull rider and the culture of African Americans and experiences in the West as well as in today’s society.”

Since 1981, Coleman’s work has been primarily influenced by an African-American painting style characterized by its bright colors and narrative themes. Coleman considers himself to be a self-taught artist, but he has also received an Associate degree in Art from St. Phillip’s College. Coleman was also a charter member and co-founder of the San Antonio Ethnic Arts Society, founded in 1984, to which he served as President.
