Susan Davidoff (El Paso)
Texas Mountain Laurel, 2002
Oil, pigment, and gold leaf on panel
48 x 72 in.
Davidoff describes the sensory beauty
that inspired Texas Mountain Laurel – San Antonio,
Dusk in the following statement: “This painting
is based on a walk through San Antonio in summer.
The air is heavy and filled with the sound of cicadas.
Texas Mountain Laurel, palms, and Buffalo grass are
intertwined in a section of a wrought iron fence from
the King William neighborhood. The gold leaf and pigment
ground suggests an evening light.”
“My recent work is involved with
forms in nature that might be easily missed –
a single leaf or a stem of grass may be enlarged to
surround the viewer. I hope that by surrounding and
at times confronting the viewer with things that in
everyday life could be passed by, I can encourage
more attention to our fragile environment.”
Susan Davidoff received her BFA from
the University of Texas at El Paso and her MFA from
New Mexico State University. She currently resides
in El Paso and teaches at the University of Texas
at El Paso.
