AT&T Center Collection of Art: Plaza Level, Garza

Jamey Garza (Austin)
Untitled (tryptich), 2002

Acrylic enamel on panel
66 x 48 in. each

Garza explains the motivation behind his work by saying, “The paintings I have been commissioned to create for the AT&T Center in San Antonio are specific to the arena’s main tenants – the San Antonio Spurs, Professional Rodeo and the fans. As a fan of both Spurs basketball and the sport of rodeo, it was not hard for me to embrace these two subjects and then turn the camera (so to speak) on myself for the painting of a cheering fan leading the crowd. I approached these canvases in a manner similar to the narrative-based paintings I have been making for the past several years. I try to break down the composition to simple shapes and forms, and then allow the narrative content to gain momentum through the use of oddly matched colors and the edges they create.”

Garza received his BFA from the University of Texas at Austin and his MFA from the San Francisco Art Institute. He currently splits his time between Austin and Los Angeles.
