Barbra Riley (Corpus Christi)
Untitled Spurs Series (Coyote), 2002
Acrylic, glitter and silver leaf on
canvas
36 x 90 in. each
Barbra Riley’s work combines photography
with paint and other media. Her fifteen paintings
in the AT&T Center were based on original photographs
from the Spurs archives. Riley describes how she “manipulated
the composition of the photographs with tonal adjustments,
color alterations, cropping, and the addition of abstract
shapes and forms. My intent is to convey action, excitement
and theater. The addition of metallic foil, metallic
powders and glitter adds complexity to the surface
and creates a three-dimensional effect as the viewer
moves and the light is reflected.”
Riley received both a BFA and an MA
in painting and photography from California State
University in Sacramento. She now resides in Corpus
Christi where she has been a Professor of Art at Texas
A&M University in Corpus Christi for over two
decades.
