Ethel Shipton (San Antonio)
Chances I and II, 2002
Vinyl, wood and metal
36 x 48 in. each
In Chances I and II, Shipton transforms a standard
basketball headboard by upholstering it with button-tucked
vinyl and then attaching a hand-woven net. The backboard
thus no longer serves its intended purpose of directing
balls through the hoop. The geometric function is
taken away so that any successful shot is a matter
of chance.
Shipton was a founder of San Antonio’s Project
Room at the Blue Star complex. She has exhibited
extensively in many San Antonio institutions and
is very active in the local contemporary arts scene.
