Penelope Speier (San Antonio)
Ways of Knowing, 2002 (3 diptychs)
Oil on canvas with glass beads
60 x 96 in. each
When commissioned to extend her “Ways
of Knowing” series for the AT&T Center, Speier
thought of the concepts pertaining to motion, kinetics
as taken from the Greek ‘kinetikos’. She
describes how “perfectly round glass beads,
the same ones used by the Texas Highway Department
to create the reflective signs placed on our freeways,
were applied over the oil paint on the canvases to
convey the quality of transformation I sought. As
one walks from side to side viewing the paintings,
each view is different because of the reflection of
light on the glass surface. Our perception of the
color and texture of the paintings seems to change
dependent on one’s position in relation to the
piece.”
Speier is the president of 04ARTS Foundation
and the director of San Antonio Visual Thinking Strategies
Program, whereby art-viewing programs for inner-city
elementary school students are planned and extended
to the community by working with school districts
and museum partners.
