AT&T Center Collection of Art: Plaza Level, Sweeney

Gary Sweeney (San Antonio)
Stars and Stripes, 2002

Resin and birch wood
65 x 112 in.

Gary Sweeney describes that his intention doe his AT&T Center commission “was to make an American flag out of basketballs. The work consists of a total of 260 basketballs, each one cast in resin and painted with high-quality automotive paint. With this project I’m continuing my theme of Americana, combining basketballs and patriotism in a light-hearted and boldly graphic design. Sports events have always been associated with patriotism; competition in sports is one of America’s favorite pastimes.”

Sweeney received his BFA at the University of California, Irvine and currently resides in San Antonio. His sculpture is widely known for its though-provoking, eccentric qualities.
