AT&T Center Collection of Art: Charter Level, Wade

Bob Wade (Austin)
Six Flags over the Alamo, 2002

Mixed media on canvas
77 x 89 in.

The striking works by Bob Wade found in the Saddles and Spurs Club are vintage black and white photographs enlarged (6-7 feet), digitally printed on canvas, and finally hand-colored by airbrushing transparent layers of acrylic paint. The King Ranch archives and the Wittliff Gallery of South Western and Mexican Photography at Southwest Texas State in San Marcos provided many of the cattle and rodeo images used in Wade’s work, including Six Flags over the Alamo, which is based on an early Texas postcard.

Bob Wade received a BFA from the University of Texas at Austin and an MA from the University of California at Berkeley. He has produced three books and his work is included in Oil Patch Dreams: Images of the Petroleum Industry in American Art (Austin Museum Of Art, March '98). Wade expressed his enthusiasm for the establishment of the AT&T Center Art Collection by saying, “I have been working with large-scale photo canvases and vintage photos for over 30 years, and I am thrilled to put my experience to work at the AT&T Center. I think viewers will like the ‘Texas Style’ content and scale that reflects the state and this great facility.”
