Ultimate Fighting Championship is coming to San Antonio.
UFC Fight Night will be held June 28 at the AT&T Center. UFC president Dana White made the announcement Saturday at UFC 171 at American Airlines Arena in Dallas.
A spokesman for Las Vegas-based UFC said bouts for the AT&T Center card, to be televised on Fox Sports 1, will be announced in the coming days.
UFC, the premier professional mixed martial arts organization in the world, began in 1993. Since being purchased by Zuffa, LLC, in 2006, the company has grown in popularity in the United States and all over the world.
“That’s huge for San Antonio,” said Lester Bedford, a Fort Worth-based regional boxing promoter who has promoted numerous MMA cards. “They’ll sell out. UFC is like the NFL or NASCAR of mixed martial arts. They’ve done a tremendous job of branding. People will come from all over the region to see it.”
Among the UFC’s first big names were Hall of Famers Chuck Liddell, Ken Shamrock and Randy Couture. Current stars include Jon Jones, Cain Velasquez and Ronda Rousey. In the UFC, bouts are staged inside an eight-sided cage known as the Octagon. MMA is a sport that combines several disciplines, including boxing, kick-boxing, wrestling and jiu jitsu.
The AT&T Center card will mark the eighth time the UFC has been to the Lone Star State since its Texas debut in Houston in 2007. In addition to Houston, where it has appeared three times at the Toyota Center, UFC events have been held in Dallas (twice), Austin and Fort Hood.
UFC has never been to San Antonio, although its former sister company, the World Extreme Cagefighting (WEC), staged WEC 43: Cerrone vs. Henderson, at the AT&T Center on Oct. 10, 2009.
